When looking to hire someone or even to become friends with someone we look for smart people that can contribute many things to us. It’s pleasant to have someone able to talk to you about their experiences and to teach you what they encountered. But is this the person that fits your organisation or your life the best?
People with lots of experience can at first instance help you to move up quicker. However it might feels like a downgrade for them, or a one way street of improvement. More important to the experience they have built is whether or not they are still keen to learn more and to keep on pushing forward. When you already have a senior employee in place consider bringing in a junior with the correct mindset. They will learn quick and due to their knowledge of newer technologies they will help your current employees to improve themselves as well.
Find the right people, not the best people. – Jack Ma
When you have build up your company from the ground up and are succeeding you will look for employees to support you. Having someone established may sound great, but it could lead to some friction concerning the difference in experience. When hiring a junior with the the good mindset they will learn rapidly and also teach you unexpected corners of life/professional life.
A last thing to determine is what people you want to be around. The personality of the people you hang out with reflect on your own personality and on your growth. Having “bad” friends will bring you down just as “good” friends will improve your life. Being in contact with people who don’t want to work or who don’t want to improve will negatively impact you. Other friends who keep on grinding and learn constantly will motivate you. Learn how you can implement this by reading our next article.
