Avoid being pushed in a certain direction

Which direction are you heading to?

There are plenty of directions to move to. What determines which path you take? Does it matter what the goal is, how difficult the path is or are you only bothered about what others think that you should be doing?

Unfortunately often we focus on how others perceive us. When friends or family tell us we should head a certain direction it’s often the direction we go to. Opinions of the people around us are not always the best path to take. It will be the path of least resistance because you follow their opinion, but it’s not the best route. For example your parents might want you to stay at your job so you maintain a “stable” income. While you want to start a business and figured out that a job is providing a stable income untill something happens. If you don’t have a job, neither are you focussing on your business then yes following the advice to at least take a part-time job is worth following.

The more people know about you, the less they can project who you are supposed to be. It’s unfortunate that you really only get one shot at that. – Rooney Mara

Currenly having an unstable income because of building your business might be the route to take for success later in life. Listening to advice and considering the potential benefits is crucial for taking important decisions. But don’t take the advice as a set-and-stone route to success. When your peers see what kind of a person you are with what character the lower the chance will be that they can form you how they want. If you are getting constructive criticism you have to do something with it to improve. However if it’s unfair criticism supporting on lies there is no reason why you should accept it. Don’t fight the person giving the resistance, but fight the arguments that are false.

When you have achieved your degree you will probably start working for someone. They take you on because you know you have potential and they can still shape you to someone supporting them and maybe becoming their best employee. With only some book knowledge be sure to accept and appreciate all the help you can get. You will only learn from everything you witness and that passes through your hands. If something happens that you can’t accept feel free to protest against it and ask for a honest review of the issue. For example taking on your first job doesn’t mean that you alone have to do the dirty work. Obviously it can be part of the job, but if you are doing all the dirty work for no reward and no possibility to grow be sure to not accept it without considering your alternative options. An alternative could be looking for a different job that also has the boring, dirty work but also include possibilities to grow.
