Think ahead

How do you see at a certain distance?

There are moments where it’s difficult to think about what is going to happen in the future. Even seeing what is happening tomorrow or next week is not as easy as it seems. If we would know ahead of time what is going to happen we would never drive to a certain location if a accident would happen, we would study harder to not fail the exam or we would choose a different course to follow that helps our life more.

While it’s difficult to understand what is going to happen you can think about the possible outcomes and prepare yourself for them. For example if you are afraid that you are going to fail an exam you can study harder and start studying long before everyone else is starting. If you know you are going to drive when a lot of people are driving you could either change the hour you drive there or you can pay more attention and anticipate that others could make a mistake and attempt to avoid your car being hit.

We usually get what we anticipate. – Claude M. Bristol

Pay attention what situation you anticipate. It’s all good that you prepare yourself for something not as pleasant to happen. However the thing we think about the most will more often than not happen because we focus ourselves on it. Instead of constantly focussing on it determine what the results can be, prepare yourself for the worse but think about the best result. For example study enough so you avoid failing your exam, but at the same time believe in your possibilities and think about how it will feel to succeed the exam. You are anticipating a potential faillure, but are working towards success.

A different method to achieve an insight in the future while not focussing on the bad is by listening to others. If you know someone who has preceeded the same situation as you there is the opportunity to listen what happened to them and whether or not it ended up being positive or negative. You’ll see what action they took and what the results was, at the same time when you are alone at home you can think about the positive outcomes. For example you have to give a presentation for a subject, someone you know in a different group has had to give the presentation before you. Listen to how they did it and what they think they should have done to improve their results. Afterwards you can focus on the positive and get the best results possible.
