What is luxury and how to avoid it?

Avoid luxury
Avoid the luxury lifestyle

As kid in the toystore we first want the small toy that looks cool. When we manage to get that one we would like the car to put the toy in, than the house and before we know it we have an entire city build around the toy. Ofcouse this is an exaggeration, but this is how we also look at things as an adult.

Everyone likes to enjoy some luxury from time to time. But how you define luxury depends on your current lifestyle. It’s your choice what you believe to be luxurious. You can call it luxury when you are going to eat out to any restaurant, or only if you are going to an expensive restaurant. The first time you go eat a fancy restaurant you don’t think much of it, you deserve it. The next time it may a little less enjoyment, even though you don’t feel it right away. Before you know it a normal restaurant isn’t enough anymore.

I’m convinced that there can be luxury in simplicity.  – Jil Sander

If you would be able to live luxurious without having to spend any money for it, it would be great. However luxury comes at a cost, and not just the monetary cost. The more money you earn the more you ‘deserve’ to be surrounded with luxury. At least that is what others tell you and you will slowly but surely be implementing more expensive activities and purchases in your life.

It’s so easy to believe people when they say you deserve to buy something nice for yourself. You have earned the money so you should spend it. There is some truth in it, you don’t need to hoard all your money till you die. However with all the social media out there more and more people earn a six figure income but they still live from paycheck to paycheck.

You are the only one who can decide for yourself what is luxury and how important it is for you. If you enjoy the simple things in life and don’t focus on the big things you will feel happier with anything you do. Any slightly bigger purchase will feel like luxury that you can still live without.
